Merritt College Strike

Merritt College, a center for scholarship, activism and community organization, was located at what is now 5714 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, in the flatlands of North Oakland. Despite the objections and public protests of numerous students and community groups, the college was relocated in 1971 to a site in the East Oakland Hills that was perceived as less accessible, particularly for African American students. This gallery captures one event in that struggle, a student strike at Merritt College.
