Black Panther Party
The Black Panther Party (BPP) for Self Defense was founded in October 1966 when Huey Newton and Bobby Seale met as students at Merritt College. North Oakland, and Merritt College in particular, emerged as the center for the political struggle over the content of classroom education and the production of knowledge outside of the schools. Green’s images document the public events and leaders, as well as a more personal and social side of members at all levels of the BPP.
